About Coral Bay

Coral Bay, on the far side of the island from Cruz Bay, is where many of the people who live on St. John actually live. The harbor is full of sailboats at anchor, the shoreline has a few bars, cafes and a market, and the pace is slower than in town. Getting there is half the fun: Centerline Road follows the ridge through the forest with views down to both coasts.

Inside the bay, the mangrove-lined coves of Hurricane Hole are part of the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, which protects coral growing among the mangrove roots and the reefs around the island. Boats have used the coves as a storm shelter for centuries. Above the harbor stands the Emmaus Moravian Church, a mission church listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

South of Coral Bay, Salt Pond Bay is a sheltered beach with good snorkeling, and the trail beyond it climbs onto Ram Head, a bare, windy point with cactus, goats and big views of the open Caribbean. It is one of the most dramatic short hikes on the island; take sun protection, since there is almost no shade.

East of Coral Bay, the road winds out along a narrow peninsula with small beaches and a handful of houses. Back in the harbor, Lime Out, a floating taco bar reached by boat, kayak or paddleboard, has become one of the island’s more unusual places to eat.
